"I felt like my words were falling on deaf ears, so I stopped telling them and started showing them."
BY JESSICA BROWN
Actions speak louder than words. Unless, that is, those words are expressed on a t-shirt, poster, stationary, or a nice holiday card.
Johnnie Roberson, teacher at Wagner High School, has been working to open a brand new business for graphic design. The inspiration for his business idea was his students. Roberson said that he always told his students to be inspired, but “I felt like my words were falling on deaf ears, so I stopped telling them and started showing them.”
Hoping to show his students an example of how business really works, Roberson took his students on a field trip to see were the making and selling of the graphics business is done. Roberson’s goal was not only to show the students the ins and outs of printing graphics, but also what he wanted to do and why he wanted to do it.
Not only did Roberson inspire himself, but he also inspired his students. Now in the final stages of launching his business, Roberson wants his students to come and be involved after they graduate high school.
“I already asked Mr. Roberson if I could come work with his business next year, and he said yes,” junior Ted Zamora said. “It’s going to be really cool.”
Roberson gets the keys in January and is going to prepare and get things started before he actually opens his business to the public Jan. 31. He plans to be open all day, five days a week. And aside from creating a hands-on learning environment for his students, he wants the store to offer new technology in printing at a cheaper price.
