POEM BY CHAVELLE HENLY, 10
Have you ever sat down to think
About the world and segregation,
would you ever let it sink
in your mind about those times?
When people walked instead of rode
the buses, about the one person who got
put in cuffs and said no to the white man
with the gun in his hand.
Sat behind bars and thought, "What world are we in?"
Discrimination, just cause the color of our skin
isn't camouflage to the white man.
It's funny how they use to treat us blacks then
but now they act like they are scared
of any black man.
We were just a bunch of people stuck in a box
and the only way we could come out
is if we kissed a white mans buttocks ,
haha. I'm just saying we were really caged in
like prisoners on farms picking cotton,
like people trying to escape
with the wonderful woman that saved peoples lives
from getting raped and beaten.
Like the one man that had a dream
about nonviolence and committing crimes ,
about those 'Whites Only' and 'Colored Only' signs,
about that one person that had enough
so he stood up to any white man
that thought they were tough.
Even though racism still goes on
everyday I walk around
proudly knowing my skin remains
the same.
