Karen Ybanez is an English II teacher, head of the English department and debate coach, and was among the 26 other JISD teachers to receive a Distinguished Educator award. Ybanez was the sole honoree from Wagner.
The award was presented to her by former superintendent Dr. Willis Mackey at the Wagner High School auditorium. When told she was going to be presented one, Ybanez was excited. "All those years of hard work as an teacher has really paid off."
Many students and fellow teachers agreed that she deserved the award. "She has done what needs to be done and gives great results when it comes to teaching," English teacher Michelle Martin said.
Ybanez was the 13th person to received her award, so the anticipation was getting to her. When she received the award, she said, "My face lid up and a big smile came."
