Most students here know the famous NBA stars Andre Roberson (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Jordan Clarkson (Los Angeles Lakers) -- two of the most famous Wagner alumni. On Friday, Feb. 13, both Roberson and Clarkson got their jerseys retired in their home gym.
"Mrs. Crockett and the athletics department worked tirelessly to make this happen and get the jersey retiring program together," said Johnnie Roberson, Wagner teacher and father of Andre Roberson. "Andre felt it was really cool and special, because it's not every day someone gets their jersey retired."
On his visit from Oklahoma City to San Antonio, Andre Roberson visited Franz Elementary School where his sister works. There Roberson got to take a moment to speak to the students, some of whom may be where he was years ago.
"As a kid he wanted to be just like his dad and play basketball," Johnnie Roberson said. Johnnie played professional basketball on an international team for twelve years. But he didn't want his son to look up to him. "I told him, no. You're going to be better than your dad. Sixth grade is when I got Andre to start training to be a ball player. From then on he got better and better. I hired specialists to help up his skills and teach him things I couldn't, so basketball could be his game. And he went out and became a pro basketball player."
