Well, we're winding down the season, and both boys' basketball teams were eliminated in the first round of playoffs . This very unusual, as JISD is well known for their basketball program. But, oh well. So what else is there to talk about now?
Well... how about the girls' basketball team beating O'Connor, and now are going back to state for their second time in two consecutive seasons?
That's right -- tonight the Lady T-Birds gear up to face Cypress Woods Houston at the Alamodome for state semi-finals. All of this comes after what sophomore Kiana Williams, who plays point guard, called "a shaky start."
"We started off 0-4. We had a lot of injuries, like four people out at a time, But as people started coming back, we started getting better and better. Once district came, we started clicking," Williams said.
According to Williams, every year it is an explicit goal to get through district undefeated. Now, after defeating O'Connor in regionals, the team will be facing an even tougher challenge.
"Cypress Woods has a 6'9" player -- she's a center. She's taller than LeBron James!" Williams said. "But our pressure is our strongest point as a team. We just gotta make shots. I'm pretty sure they're going to zone us. I think if we focus defensively, we should be okay."
Whatever Wagner head coach Andrea Camacho is doing, it's clearly working. Under Camacho the Lady T-birds have consistently done well, going far in the playoffs and outshining our rivals Judson. So from us to you, T-Birds: we want more. Bring that trophy home!
