Every football game, the spotlight is on the same people -- the quarterback, linebackers, running backs and maybe even the coaches.
Usually, no one is left talking about special teams offense, the guys who make extraordinary game winning field goals.
At this year's Hammer Bowl, place kicker Gerardo Ibanez got to have all the glory. Even though he didn't make the winning kick, his kick made him the scorer of Wagner's single field goal.
"I was feeling only two feelings -- confidence and excitement," Ibanez said. "I was excited that I knew I was the only person to score, and confident, because I knew my O-line was going to block for me to allow me to score."
The final score in the Hammer Bowl was 47-3 in favor of the Judson Rockets. According to quarterback Jordan Batson, the main problem was the team's momentum.
"We just couldn't get started and Judson's linebackers couldn't be stopped in time to let our running back do his job," Batson said. "Under all the pressure, it felt as if we were in a Superbowl game."
Unlike some Superbowl teams, however, thanks to Ibanez, Wagner put points on the scoreboard. The Thunderbirds next face off against Canyon High school in New Braunfels at 7:30 pm
