Following the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, one of Wagner’s own will be participating in an oratory speech competition where she will give a 4 to 6 minute speech about her response to political violence.
“I first became interested when my mom’s sorority had me and a group read a poem," sophomore Zavia McKinnies said. "The person who showed the most emotion and had the best performance won."
With this event, McKinnies said, the topic appealed to her because it was "interesting" and "controversial." The event is being hosted by the San Antonio Pan-Hellenic Council and will feature junior and high school students speaking in response to the question: “How would Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. respond to the recent incidents of excessive force used by law enforcement authorities in the commission of their duties?”
“I think this competition is a great opportunity for me to get ready in the real world," McKinnies said. "One day it will help me in an interview.”
The competition provides prizes for the winners, including scholarship money. The event will be held Jan. 25 at 1 pm at MLK Academy.
