Sometimes all you need to do is take a chance.
That’s what juniors Tamara Havis and Samitree Govan did on Saturday morning at Judson High School. Havis and Govan were competing in Public Forum, which is, according to Govan, "a courtroom-like debate consisting of two people.”
Havis and Govan had to tackle the topic ‘On balance public subsidies for professional athletic organizations in the United States benefit their local communities.’ If that sounds like a challenging topic, that's because it is -- and that's a big part of competing in Public Forum.
“Everything depends on the research and the practice," adviser Karen Ybanez said.
Even with lots of research and practice behind them, Govan said, "we'd never done this before, so I was both nervous and scared."
Havis and Govan faced off with two other teams in their division. However, there was no need to be scared, because in the end, they received second place. And while it may not be first place, Havis isn't daunted.
“We spoke well, but sometimes there are just better people.” Havis said “There’ll be plenty other opportunities to extract revenge and come out on the very top.”
She's not kidding -- Public Forum competitions happen just about every other Saturday so there will be plenty of time to practice even harder.
